Rapper/composer Guru (real name Keith Elam) first rose to prominence as the "lyrical half" of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, one of the first outfits that attempted to fuse jazz with rap.
After three albums by Gang Starr hit record store shelves (1989's No More Mr. Nice Guy, 1991's Step in the Arena, and 1992's Daily Operation), Guru launched his own solo career, issuing Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1 in 1993. Gang Starr is the super duo consisting of non other then DJ Permier and the famous lyrical master, Guru.
Despite his solo career, Guru remained true to Gang Starr as well, continuing to contribute to further albums such as 1994's Hard to Earn and 1998's Moment of Truth.
Guru's jazzmatazz series is all put together in vol 1-4. Jazzmatazz vol 1, Jazzmatazz, vol 2(the new reality), Jazzmatazz vol 3(streetsoul), Jazzmatazz vol 4(the hip hop jazz messenger).
In 2004 Guru came out with the album: Version 7.0: The Street Scriptures. The first on his new label, 7 Grand Records, with beats by Solar (who became a vital force on 7 Grand's subsequent releases)
Guru has been known to release sleeper singles that cannot be found on his albums and has features in many branches of the game. Listen to "State of clarity"(ft.common) on youtube: Click here

AZ
One of the numerous thoughtful gangsta rappers to emerge from New York during the mid-'90s, AZ enjoyed critical success early in his career, particularly with his debut album, Doe or Die (1995), but commercial success largely eluded him over the years.
Born in Brooklyn, he initially garnered attention with his guest feature on "Life's a Bitch," one of the standout tracks on Nas' landmark debut album, Illmatic (1994).
Listen to Life's A Bitch ft. AZ on Youtube: Click here
In the wake of Doe or Die's critical success, AZ collaborated with Nas, Nature & Foxy Brown in the ill-fated supergroup the Firm and released The Firm: The Album
AZ released Pieces of a Man in 1998, another critical favorite.
But for the most part, that was it from AZ for several years as he fell by the wayside, not surfacing in a big way again until a pair of Motown releases, 9 Lives (2001) and Aziatic (2002), that didn't sell any better than his previous efforts.
He subsequently took his music underground, periodically releasing albums such as A.W.O.L. (2005). In 2004 the double-disc retrospective Decade 1994-2004 looked back over his career to date, gathering up various highlights. In 2006 he released the album: The Format, and in 2007 he released: Undeniable.
With so many albums out, AZ has a lot to offer. All the way back from the beginning of the 90's, and until today, he steady keeps on making that good music.
Even thought, AZ has collaborated with many high ranked Hip Hop Artists like Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Nas & The Firm and more, AZ never got the attention he deserved. AZ is considered a lyrical veteran, and remain as an underground artist. Even thought he's strong effort to the Hip Hop game, he's exposure to the media became minimal, & he still rises in the heart of Hip Hop lovers today.

Masta Ace
With an impressive resume in rap that includes membership in the legendary Juice Crew (along with Marley Marl, MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, and Craig G) and a verse on the 1988 classic posse cut "The Symphony," Brooklyn's Masta Ace is truly an underappreciated rap veteran and underground luminary.
Masta Ace formed a Crew in the early 90's Called: Masta Ace Incorporated. The nickname given to the clique of rappers surrounding Masta Ace. This lineup includes Bluez Bruthaz member Lord Digga, vocalist Paula Perry, and Brooklyn based singer/songwriter Leschea. This lineup would work on 1993's SlaughtaHouse and 1995's Sittin' on Chrome before Masta Ace began releasing albums without their support.
In the 90's, hip hop changed dramatically. The decade was a big bang for many up and coming artists. The 90's was packed with beef, media arrangements and newcomers. Masta Ace's style became more modern and adapted to the new sounds of the 90's and Masta Ace continued to make that good, ill, off the hook, Hip Hop!
Masta Ace dropped: disposable art's in 2001. This album is so lyrically packed with goods and aspects that pinpoints the game for what it truly is, as he explains the difference between the Underground and the commercial media world. Masta Ace is first of all a Confrontational MC & that is only one of the reasons why Masta Ace and other MC's like him, don't get promoted as much by the media. This album is my favorite from Masta Ace!
In 2004 Masta Ace dropped: A long hot summer. This album is also packed with the good's and contains a lot of interesting aspects on life and the biz'.
Ace has been known to release sleeper singles that cannot be found on his albums and has features in many branches of the game.
Here is two feature preview of Masta Ace that you won't find on any of he's albums.

Considered as an underground artist, Masta Ace never got the attention he deserved. Masta ace is profoundly one of the best lyrical MC's and he's style is not to be matched. Masta Ace has over 20 years of experience and has reflected he's lyrics on facts and mind-blowing thoughts since the beginning.

Blackalicious
Like a few other West Coast rap acts, including the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blackalicious has generally favored what hip-hoppers call the "positive tip"; in other words, its lyrics have often been spiritual and uplifting rather than violent or misogynous.
Like a lot of experimental alternative rappers, Blackalicious can be quirky and eccentric; nonetheless, spirituality is a big part of the group's music. Although Blackalicious wasn't formed until the early '90s, its members had known each other since the late '80s. Founding members Gift of Gab (Timothy Parker) and Chief Xcel (Xavier Mosley)
In the early 90's Blackalicious has teamed up with the SoleSides Crew, consisting of: DJ Shadow, Lateef the Truth Speaker, and Lyrics Born. In 1994, that label released Blackalicious' debut single "Swan Lake." Although not a triple-platinum smash, the single was a small underground hit that fared well among alternative rap audiences. The following year, SoleSides Records released a Blackalicious EP titled Melodica. By late 1997, SoleSides Records had transformed into Quannum Records, and in 1999, Quannum put out another Blackalicious EP, A2G.
In 2000, Quannum released the group's full-length debut Nia (whose title is the Swahili word for purpose). After being together eight years, Blackalicious finally signed with a major label when, in late 2000, the Californians were added by MCA. In April 2002, Quannum/MCA released Blazing Arrow, which boasted guest appearances ranging from vocalist Zack de la Rocha (of Rage Against the Machine) to the Roots' ?uestlove to veteran soul singer Gil Scott-Heron.
The pair returned in 2005 for their third album, The Craft, with a contract in hand from the Anti-label.

The Last Emperor
The Last Emporor, a West Philadelphia native has been an underground hip-hop mover and shaker since the mid-'90s. Having attended Overbrook High, Philadelphia's own hip-hop high, which saw the likes of Cool C, Steady B, and the Fresh Prince pass through its hallowed halls, Last Emp became a B-Boy by osmosis in addition to being a wizard in the classroom.
After graduating from the nation's first historically black college (Lincoln University), Emp took his act to New York, where he caught on with storied Lyricist Lounge. Emperor's first on-wax experience was a significant one, appearing alongside KRS-One and Rage Against the Machine's Zach de la Rocha on the cut "C.I.A." from 1998's Lyricist Lounge, Vol. 1. Having served notice to his scholastic street skill, Emperor hit the road to polish up his on-stage performance, occasionally popping up on mix tapes from time to time.
Having stirred the underground into a frenzy with rumors of a debut album, in early 2000 official word came that Emp had signed with independent kingpin label Rawkus. Distribution problems, however, kept the record off the racks.
Listen to his legendary Secret Wars part 1, on youtube: "Secret wars part 1": Click here

Last Emperor with a message, taken from he's lyric's, has a conclusion that 85% of the game that is involved in the media is based on a fake image. That MC's speaks about things that is not real. Things that has nothing positive to offer the world, and that the lyrics is only revolving around them self. No logic & common sense. Do you live your everyday life, pimp'in, or hustling with a tech nine in your waist? Most people don't...
Last Emperor, with he's political, historian, confrontational, street-smart flow, has given me chills down my spine. The Last Emperor gives me total satisfaction when it comes to lyrics. Nothing is is better, then listening to an intelligent MC that really knows what he's is talking about, spreading he's messages to the world, through he's music.

This blog has over 100 upcoming artists/articles that will feature on www.hiphopinjection.blogspot.com. Yes, there is more than a 100 good MC's and DJ's out there, but i can't cover them all. But i will try to feature as many artists and groups that i think promote that good, ill, off the hook Hip Hop. If you are satisfied so faar, then you should follow my blog in the future!

Little Brother
Little brother:
Part of the new-millennium resurgence of alternative rap, Little Brother's inspirations were atypical for Southern hip-hop: classic Native Tongues outfits like De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as more recent torch-bearers like the Roots and Black Star.
MCs Phonte (born Phonte Coleman) and Big Pooh (born Thomas Jones) swapped rhymes with an easy chemistry, but the group's real focal point was DJ/producer 9th Wonder (born Pat Douthit), an old-school sampling technician who quickly established himself as a worthy heir to production wizards like DJ Premier and Pete Rock.
Little brother is members of the Justus League crew. The JL crew has made a series of bootleg albums together.
Little brother has made a large number of albums before 9th wonder parted from the group in 2007.

Group Home
Hip-hop duo Lil' Dap and Melachi -- collectively known as Group Home -- surfaced in 1995 on a compilation called Guru Presents Ill Kids Records, which was released around the same time as their debut album, Livin' Proof.
In spite of Guru's championing the duo, Group Home remained silent for a few years, finally reappearing in 1999 with the album A Tear for the Ghetto, which featured cameos from Guru, Steph Lova, and the Jerky Boys.
DJ Premier had a large production hand for Group Home and has produced the hip hop classic: "Supa star".

Pacewon
As a founding member of the Outsidaz, Pacewon was one of the many MCs to gain a solo career after his group's appearance on the Fugees' successful The Score. With a smooth voice and a sly, clever tone, his raps were often relaxed and thoughtful amidst the large hip-hop crew's various styles.
Despite the early solo attempts by many of his bandmates, Pacewon waited until they had released their debut, Night Life, on Chris Schwartz's Rough Life Records. That, as well as guest appearances on records from Redman and Rah Digga, was enough to convince Schwartz to ask the MC for a solo record in 2002. With help from Wyclef Jean, Kurupt, and fellow Outsidaz member Young Zee, he put together Won, a collection of funky tracks courtesy of Jay-Z producer SKI that revolved around his charismatic voice and boastful rhymes.
Pacewon has made an album with Mr.Green called: The only color that matters is Green. The two of them go grate together, genius beat's and an intellectual MC on the mic! Pacewon is also out with 3 other albums that i know of: Won, the Pace won effect, and Telepathy.

Athletic Mic League
Athletic Mic League, A.K.A AML, began to aspire as hip hop artists in the late 90's. The six MCs that make up Ann Arbor, MI's Athletic Mic League met each other through high school and basketball courts. Initially rhyming for recreational purposes, Tres Styles, 14K, Buff, Vital, Texture, and Grand Cee began to focus more on rap as a career as the people around them started to recognize the skills they were developing.
Athletic Mic League is out with 3 albums that i know of: The thrill is gone, Sweats and kicks and Jungle gym jungle, all of them with nice sound and quality. A great edition to your hip hop library.

DJ Premier
Premier, A.K.A. Premo, born Chris Martin, spent time in Brooklyn and Houston while growing up, and studied computer science at Prairie View A&M outside Houston. In 1987-1988 he came into contact with Guru, a Boston native. DJ Premier and Guru signed to Wild Pitch under the name of "Gangstarr" and released a debut single ("Manifest") and album (No More Mr. Nice Guy)
DJ Premier had the status as the most important trackmaster of the '90s, and no style is more distinctive. Aggressive and raw, a Premier track was an instantly recognizable soundclash of battling loops and heavy scratching -- all of them perfectly timed -- that evoked the sound of Brooklyn better than anyone. Besides helming tracks for his main concern, Gang Starr, since their 1989 debut, Premier's productions appeared on many of the East Coast's most important records: Nas' Illmatic, the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die, Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt, Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East, and Mos Def's Black on Both Sides.
The year 1994 was a huge one for Premier, probably the best year for any rap producer ever; in addition to dropping another Gang Starr classic, Hard to Earn, his productions appeared on five-star, all-time classics by Nas (Illmatic), the Notorious B.I.G. (Ready to Die), and Jeru the Damaja (The Sun Rises in the East), as well as Big Daddy Kane and Branford Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque project.
Premier has been known to release sleeper singles that cannot be found on his albums and has features in many branches of the game.
Here is a feature preview of DJ Premiere that you won't find on any of he's albums.
Listen on youtube: Verbal Threat "Reality Check(ft. DJ Premier)": Click here
DJ Premier has an heir as the most valuable producer in the NYC and is a raw legend in both the underground world and in the commercial world. He's still producing tody and he's latest entry on tour was with Black Poet.
I was lucky to catch he's club concert in Oslo, Norway in late 2008. I gave him a handshake with the other hand on my heart, saying thank you!

Pete Rock
Rapper, DJ, and producer Pete Rock first emerged in 1991 as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth, debuting with the All Souled Out EP. A hit LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother, followed before the two went their separate ways in the wake of 1994's The Main Ingredient.
Pete rock is a top notch, old-school sampling technician and a master on the MPC. He is well known for he's instrumentals with he's touch of soul and funk. If you are in to the non-commercial hip hop world, and are listening to Pete rock, you can often recognize a sound or a beat of he's without knowing the title of the song. It's like a sound brand that every great DJ/Producer can achieve. Pete Rock, 9th wonder, DJ premier, J dilla, DJ jazzy jeff, DJ Scratch and so on all have their own sound and perfection method, a trademark for the finest DJ's in hip hop.
To name a few of the many artists Pete rock has worked with: I.N.I, Edo-G, Guru, DJ Premiere, 9th Wonder, Jeru the damaja, Pharoahe Monch, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, C.L. Smooth and many other artists. He has produced many albums, with both vocal, and instrumental tracks.

J-Dilla. One of the Best!
Frequently and rightly placed in the same context as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, and 9th wonder, Jay Dee built and sustained a high standing as a producer's producer while maintaining a low profile. J dilla was also a man on the mic and you can say that music was in he's blood.
Born and raised on the east side of Detroit, Dilla -- James Yancey -- was forced by his parents to become involved with music, and he was a record fanatic at a young age, absorbing funk and rap singles and jazz albums, from Slave to Jack McDuff. He learned to play cello, keyboards, trumpet, and violin, but drums got him like nothing else. He tried his hand at producing tracks on a tape deck by using the pause and record buttons, and he also took up MCing. In 1988, he formed Slum Village with Pershing High School friends Baatin and T3. It wasn't until 1992, after receiving some valuable guidance from fellow Detroiter Amp Fiddler, that his talent really began to take shape.
Through he's tremendous carrier he produced beats for artists like: Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, The Roots, Common, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Phat kat, Talib Kweli, Dwele and more...
In 2003 his health took a sharp decline. For over two years, he had to use a dialysis machine. Despite having to perform in a wheelchair, he was still able to tour in Europe during late 2005. Three days after his 32nd birthday i February, 2006, while staying at his Los Angeles home with his mother, he passed away, a victim of cardiac arrest. Rest in peace! 6 months after, with help from a friend and colleague, the album: "The shining", was released.
